Maranacook offers German I, German II, German III, German IV, and German AP V. The German program provides a comprehensive, in-depth approach to learning a foreign language. Students learn not just to communicate clearly and effectively, but also to appreciate the German language and culture (including the infamous annual German Dessert bakeoff!). Classroom discussions and language immersion programs, such as the annual Sprachfest held at Colby or Bates College, along with the GAPP exchange, strengthen and define this highly rewarding program. AATG National Test Top 10 in Maine, 2007
These students and their parents were honored at the Blaine House on May 22, 2007.

 This photo was taken at the Annual German Dessert Bakeoff, in which all German classes participate in the spring. The goal is to introduce students to using the metric system of measurement, and work with a group to produce a cultural (and delicious) product. Frau Ladd brings back a supply of ingredients from Germany that can't be found here. Students are graded on their class work, and compete for prizes (the criteria are perceived level of difficulty, appearance and taste). Cakes are judged by a staff of volunteer judges (no arm-twisting necessary!).
During the presentation, students explain in German the process they went through, the ingredients used, whether it was hard or easy, how long it took, and how the final product tastes. A great experience for everyone involved! | |
