Alternative Programs

Maranacook's Alternative School, located on the North Road in Readfield, is available to certain high school students whose educational needs are not being met in the regular school setting. The program goals and objectives are centered on the unique academic, vocational and social needs of each student and include a strong community-based learning component. Individual programs are self-paced and designed according to the student's needs and interests. This program provides non-traditional opportunities for students to earn the standard MCS diploma; students are considered for placement based on referral by teachers, administrators, parents or themselves. The Guidance Office handles the application process and can provide a description of the program and acceptance requirements to interested students.

Students from seven sending high schools in this area meet at the Center on a daily basis. Students are given the opportunity to train in the program and prepare for the occupation of their choice. The vocational experience is also a solid foundation for those planning to attend post-secondary institutions. A total of 4 credits are earned for the year, providing the student attending remains for 6 periods. Transportation is provided. Interested students have the opportunity to visit the facility in the spring and apply to attend. Contact Dean of Students Mert Dearnley (x306) or Guidance Counselor Shannon Bergeron (x326) for more information.

COLLEGE COURSEWORK
Several area colleges offer free or reduced-price courses to eligible high school juniors and seniors. This is a wonderful opportunity for seniors to get a taste of college life and enhance their college applications, while earning high school and college credits simultaneously at great savings. See our Take College Courses Now! page for more information, or contact Guidance Counselor Shannon Bergeron at x326.

SPECIAL EDUCATION
Individual, small group, life skills, and behavioral programs are available to students with educational needs that are not met in the regular curriculum. A Pupil Evaluation Team (PET), a committee of parents, students and staff members, places students in these programs. Students with autism, blindness, deafness, emotional disability, hearing impairment, mental retardation, multiple disabilities, orthopedic impairment, other health impairment, specific learning disability, speech and language impairment, traumatic brain injury, or visual impairment may qualify for developmental education services. An Individualized Education Program (IEP) is developed for each developmental education student with parental consent and cooperation.

LEARNING CENTER
Students who might not qualify for formalized developmental services may still receive assistance in the school's Learning Center. Students can be assigned for study hall periods or, with permission, may be released from class for help with academic work.
