Big Brothers / Big Sisters Program at MCHS
In fall 2004, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Kennebec Valley (www.heroeswanted.org) began instituting an exciting site-based mentoring program at Maranacook . Participating students meet every Wednesday afternoon with their “Littles”
(elementary school partners) at the high school for 1.5 hours of fun activities: shooting hoops, playing in the snow or on the fields, doing homework or crafts, taking walks – whatever helps build a one-on-one, trusting relationship. In the spring, everyone gets together to take part in a group community service project.
The Mentor-Little partnership is based on the Five Promises promoted by America’s Promise – The Alliance for Youth: Caring Adults, Safe Places, Healthy Start, Marketable Skills, and Opportunities to Serve (see America's Promise for more information). Littles are chosen by teachers and guidance counselors as children needing a little extra support and encouragement, often who are struggling with schoolwork or interpersonal relationships. Personality matches are then carefully made with high school mentors; the object is to offer the Littles someone who is there just
for them, who makes them feel important, valued, and listened to. This partnership will last as long as possible, even from school year to school year, in the hopes that the experience will help the Littles develop the motivation and direction that comes with a sense of security and belonging.
Big Brothers Big Sisters is impressed with Maranacook’s level of participation – Littles from every elementary school in the district are taking part, and 35 high school students have interviewed to be mentors!
