The Maranacook Advisor System
Maranacook is well-known for its advisor system, which was developed by the original staff as one of the founding principles of Maranacook Community School. It is a comprehensive support system for students, parents and staff. Each student is assigned to an advisee group by grade level. Efforts are made to make each group as diverse as possible, considering such factors as towns of residence, gender, interests, needs and strengths. The Deans of Students in the high school and the guidance counselor in the middle school are responsible for the development, implementation, and monitoring of the system. The advisor program reinforces strong community, student, and faculty ties, and provides a support system for each student. Students meet with their advisor in homeroom from 8:00-8:15, and also participate in special events and activities with
their advisee groups throughout the year.
ADVISEE ACTIVITIES
Advisee Day Out / Day of Caring
September
Each year the freshmen spend the day together doing fun activities; the sophomores explore careers through job shadowing; the juniors volunteer for the United Way's Day of Caring, and the seniors have breakfast together and work on projects at school.
Make a Difference Day
October
MS counselor Maggie McKinney and HS Dean of Students Pat Stanton supervise middle and high school advisee groups as they compete to collect the most food and non-perishable items for National Make a Difference Day. Collected items are delivered to food banks in Mt. Vernon & Readfield.
Kids Who Care Day
December
This annual half-day event allows advisee groups to give to Maranacook area communities, supporting people in need. Successful events have included wreath-making; baking for food banks; and working with the Family Violence Center and other agencies to “Adopt a Family” or assist a local senior citizen.
Advisee Day Out
June
Freshman, sophomore, and junior advisee groups end the school year together doing fun activities such as Old Orchard Beach, Popham Beach, and Funtown/Splashtown.
