Model U.N.
Since 2004, the MCHS Social Studies Department accompanies a group of students each May to the annual Model United Nations simulation at Northeastern University or at USM in Gorham, Maine, This year we attended the conference at Northeastern which is sponsored by the United Nations Association of Greater Boston. MCHS students started preparing in February, each researching the political positions of an assigned country as well as two topics for discussion. Students must also become familiar with the UN flow of debate and parliamentary procedure. Students and staff meet after school and communicate through e-mail in preparation for the conference.
The 400 attendees at this conference represent public and private schools from all over New England. This includes schools such as Milton Academy, MA; Notre Dame Academy, MA; Brookline High School, MA Timberlane High School, NH; and the International School of Boston, MA just to name a few.
Upon arrival, students are given conference supplies and have the privilege to listen to a key note speech from a Northeastern Professor. Students then spent the next two days debating issues around illegal trafficking of lora and fauna, disarmament, sustainable tourism, the World Bank, Nuclear Terrorism, the use of peace-keeeping forces, religious intolerance, and sports for recreation. At the end of the two days, our students had performed incredibly well! This was a fantastic learning opportunity, as our students got to meet students from other schools, cultures, and ethnic backgrounds.
Our students worked hard to pass resolutions and debate the issues. Overall, this experience was a special one for the staff and students involved!
Congratulations to Jillian Blouin and Eryn Neptune for earning an award for their work respresenting South Africa in the Security Council!
