Jessyca Flanders from Maranacook Community High School traveled to Washington DC in May to meet with Senator Olympia Snowe and Senator Susan Collins to share her views on the impact of school based health centers on the lives of students and their families. Jess did a fantastic job of communicating how the Maranacook Student Health Center has supported her and the importance of the health center for all students. Jess joined Kini Tinkham, a Maranacook parent from Manchester, and Lisa Burgess, Executive Director of the Maine Assembly on School-Based Health Care, in recognizing the Senators and thanking them for their support of the State Children's Health Insurance Program (SCHIP) legislation and for their support (Snowe is a co-sponsor) of the Healthy Schools Act of 2009. Brooke Lehmann of the National Assembly on School-Based Health Care spoke of the national impact of school-based health centers and the need for financial stability in order to maintain existing school-based health centers and develop new centers.

Below are links that will take you to a number of informative web sites that address various health topics. The health center student advisory committee and the adult community advisory committee reviewed and recommneded these web sites for inclusion. Also included is a link to a number of free/low cost activities around central Maine that provide the opportunity to get outside & enjoy the fresh air while getting some exercise.

The school-based Maranacook Student Health Center serves all students in grades 6-12. Services are designed to meet the needs of the students during school hours. The mission of the Health Center is to provide support for the optimal physical and mental health of MCS students by providing access to a comprehensive array of treatment services, health information and referral services. Our aim is to keep students healthy; reduce time lost from school; teach healthy lifestyle practices, and detect and treat problems and illnesses before they become serious. Students are encouraged to take responsibility for their own health care. The Maranacook Community School District/CSD #10 and MaineGeneral Health Associates jointly support the Student Health Center.
