Student Health Center Services
SCHOOL NURSE SERVICES
The Health Center is available to all students. The school nurse can help you with the following needs each and every day of the week at no cost:
- Space for students who do not feel well to rest and/or get assistance in calling home if they need to be dismissed.
- First aid for minor accidents and injuries, with help getting further care when necessary.
- Acetaminophen or Ibuprofen for minor aches and pains.
- Assistance with chronic conditions such as asthma, diabetes, or eating disorders.
- Reproductive health services including pregnancy testing and condom availability, with appropriate information/counseling.
- General health counseling and/or health information.
- Educational support groups organized around specific health topics (e.g., smoking cessation, stress management).
EXPANDED MEDICAL SERVICES
Expanded medical services are also available with our physician assistant and pediatric nurse practitioner if you choose this option:
- Diagnosis, treatment, and triage of injuries;
- Diagnosis and treatment of illnesses such as strep throat, mono, and ear infections;
- Prescriptions and over-the-counter medications;
- Evaluation of recurring symptoms such as headaches or stomach pains;
- Assistance with chronic conditions, such as asthma, eating disorders, or diabetes;
- Reproductive health care including education and counseling; prescription contraception and contraception management; diagnosis and treatment of sexually transmitted infections; and pregnancy testing
- Provision of routine lab tests, including hemoglobin, cultures, screenings for mono and strep;
- Medical health counseling;
- Referrals for off-site treatment.
EXPANDED BEHAVIORAL HEALTH SERVICES
The student health center offers high quality, on-site counseling services through the School-Based Behavioral Health Collaborative. Kennebec Behavioral Health is the collaborative partner with the student health center. These services are available to any student who is signed up for expanded behavioral health center services in grades 6-12.

- Individual and family counseling
- Substance abuse assessments and treatment
- Educational support groups
- Educational seminars for staff, students, and parents
- Consultations for parents and MCS staff
- Referrals for off-site treatment
Requests for Services
Requests for these services are made with Cindy Flye, Health Center Coordinator in the high school and with Vicky Gabrion, school nurse in the middle school. Cindy and Vicky work together to coordinate each counselor’s caseload make appointments for students and sends reminders, and assist with communication between the counselor and staff or parents if necessary. If a student or parent is not sure they want or need counseling they can set up a time to consult with one of the counselors. This will give the student/parent an opportunity to meet one of the counselors and decide if counseling is something they want to pursue.
Counseling Team
The team consists of providers from Kennebec Behavioral Health who provide services five days per week. Members of the team include:

Erik Nickerson, LCSW (Wednesday and Fridays)
Services are provided at the high school health center for MS and HS students as well as at the offices of the counselors. Services are billed for through health insurance by the provider organization. If a student’s family does not have health insurance the team will work with the family on affordable payment options.
Psychosocial Problems
The following list includes some of the problems students may be dealing with that could warrant counseling:
- Depression/suicide
- Relationship problems
- Anxiety
- Risk of school failure/dropping out
- Disabilities
- Gender and/or sexual orientation issues
- Physical/sexual abuse
- Grief
- Neglect
- Eating problems
- Drug/alcohol abuse
- Teen pregnancy
- Self-esteem
- Reactionsn to chronic illness
- School adjustment
- Self-injury
Being able to work directly with students, staff and parents at the school provides a unique opportunity to deliver counseling services in an environment that is familiar to the students and their families. It also encourages more effective communication/coordination between all of the people that share responsibility for the students’ healthy development. ATHLETIC TRAINER SERVICES
Rich Garini, LATC, CEAS comes to the Maranacook Schools on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from MaineGeneral Health Sports Medicine. As a trainer, he assesses and rehabilitates athletic injuries and educates athletes to avoid injury and stay healthy. He deals with many muscular-skeletal problems that include injuries to bones, ligaments and muscles. Rich acts as a liaison between the athlete, parents and the primary care provider to speed up recovery.
This is Rich’s second year here at Maranacook. Students may sign up to see the trainer - the sign up sheet is posted on the middle school wellness center door and the high school health center door. He is at the high school health center on Mondays from 11:00 AM - 12:15 PM and the middle school wellness center from 12:15 PM – 1:00 PM; on Wednesdays and Fridays he is at the middle school 1:00 PM – 1:45 PM and the high school 1:50 - 3:00.
