Teen Issues

MISSION STATEMENT
Teen Issues Days are held every year so that students can become better educated, aware and prepared for problems and situations that they face or could face in the future. During the time they are encouraged to be introspective in relation to their own opinions and attitudes, and be open to others different than their own. Teen Issues Days harbor a safe, supportive and creative environment for students to have fun and not be afraid to change.

Teen Issues workshops are made possible by the generous support of the Student Senate, Gardiner Savings Bank, Making It Count, Awesome Bear Society, and the Maranacook Area Schools community.

2006 HIGHLIGHTS
Theme: Change for a better self, school, community, and world for the present and the future
Teen Issues opened with a keynote address by filmmaker Jean Kilbourne entitled "Growing Up in America”, a multimedia presentation demonstrating the impact of the media and advertising in shaping youth culture in today's world. Following this session, actor John Morello presented a powerful one-man show depicting eight different people impacted by the substance abuse of one person. In comedian Matt Bellace’s presentation, students learned how to be effective leaders among their peers and how to get high naturally, and how the power of one can make a difference.

We are especially pleased to welcome Maine-born musician Johnny Hiland, who led a master guitar class and performed with a local band for the school. Although born legally blind in rural Maine, Johnny has gone on to beat the odds and now is dazzling people throughout the world with his guitar skills.
Matt Bellace finished off the event off with a public evening dialogue session on underage drinking in our communities.

A tremendous amount of thanks to Dean of Students Pat Stanton and the Teen Issues Committee for pulling off another fantastic two days! Their dedication and enthuasiasm are what make Maranacook such a great place.
