HEALTH CENTER STUDENT ADVISORY COMMITTEE

The mission of the Student Advisory Committee is to advocate for the School Based Health Center at the local, state and national level and educate Maranacook students about health center services and important adolescent health issues.

Our Student Advisory Committee has:
• Provided overview of health center services at student class meetings & to all 9th grade students in classes
• Consulted with health center staff on equipment grant purchases to improve health center environment and make it more student friendly
• Hosted fund raisers to support advocacy activities including attendance at the National School-Based Health Alliance convention
• Attended Maine Lobby Day to educate policy makers on the importance of School-Based Health Centers - met with Maranacook's area legislators
• Testified before the Maine State Legislature Appropriations Committee to advocate to protect the Fund for a Healthy Maine which supports school-based student health centers
• Participated with Project Aware & the Maine Family Planning Association in the creation and promotion of a Sexual Health Film to be used by educators in Maine schools
• Spoke at a Press conference to encourage Maine Legislators to equalize the Tobacco Tax on other tobacco products; testified before the Maine State Legislature Taxation Committee
• Produced a video for the Maine Governor and Legislature to encourage increasing the Tobacco tax to protect the health of young people
• Provided input on a new web page for teens and distributed wooden nickels with www.MaineTeenHealth.org address
• Visited Maine's Congressional Representatives in Washington DC to advocate for federal funds to support SBHC operations
