Wayne Elementary Read to ME Challenge: Images of people holding books.

February was an incredibly special month at Wayne Elementary, and we are excited to share the wonderful things that have been happening in our school. This month, our halls were filled with the voices of community members, the excitement of our students, and a shared celebration of reading and connection.

The Maine Read to ME Challenge

This February marked the 11th annual Maine Read to ME Challenge, a month-long public awareness campaign organized by the Maine Department of Education. The challenge is designed to foster a love of reading and support literacy development among Maine’s children. The concept is simple but powerful: adults across the state are encouraged to read to and with children for at least 15 minutes a day during the month of February. Participants are invited to capture these moments through photos or short videos and share them on social media using the hashtag #ReadtoME, inspiring others to do the same. The challenge runs throughout the month of February and wraps up on Read Across America Day, March 2.

Research shows that reading to a child for just 15 minutes a day over five years results in over 27,000 minutes of language exposure—a foundation that can lead to strong literacy development and a lifelong love of learning. The Read to ME Challenge brings this message to life by inviting communities to rally around their youngest readers.

How Wayne Made It Our Own

At Wayne Elementary, we embraced the spirit of the Read to ME Challenge and put our own community-centered spin on it. Rather than simply reading aloud, we invited community members into our school to share their community connections—their talents, skills, passions, and stories about what makes Wayne such a special place to live.

Throughout the month, we were fortunate to have community members visit our school nearly every school day. Each visitor brought something unique to share with our students, whether it was a reading from a favorite book tied to their work or a conversation about their role in our community. These visits gave students a window into the many ways people contribute to the place we all call home.

By weaving together reading with real-world connections, our students didn’t just hear a story—they got to know the people behind the stories in our community. This approach helped make literacy feel personal, relevant, and deeply connected to the world right outside our school doors.

A Heartfelt Thank You

Thank you to Theresa Kerchner for helping to organize this event- bringing students and the community together!

We also want to extend our deepest gratitude to every community member who took time out of their busy schedules to visit Wayne Elementary this February. Your willingness to share your talents, skills, and passions with our students made this year’s Read to ME Challenge truly unforgettable. These experiences help our children feel more connected to where they live, to the people around them, and to our school community. Thank you for reminding our students that learning doesn’t just happen in textbooks—it happens all around us, through the incredible people in our community.
